Subjects to Specifically Pay Attention to if You are Planning to give AILET

LAW Entrance | AILET | 6th October 2022

It has become prominent these days to have a clear vision for the future. Every day we face questions like, what are you thinking about next in your life? What are your goals? What are you aiming for? And whatnot. I have faced all of these questions. For so many people, it seems easy to choose their career but trust me it is not as easy as it seems. Plus, we add up to the zest of doing something different from everyone else, making the wide path narrower.

I belong to a family of Lawyers and was expected to opt for the same career. Dad being a Civil lawyer and Mom being a criminal lawyer, I have always been fascinated by the diversity of Law under one roof. Everybody these days choose engineering, and doctorate or commerce, but I was more inclined on becoming a lawyer. Under Law one can choose different types of specialisation like labour law, human rights law and international law, land laws, company law, legal aids, and much more.

LLB or Legum Baccalaureus is a 3-year Bachelor's Degree which one should study to become a lawyer. So, LLB can be done directly after 12th std, or after completion of your under-graduation degree. Now, there are so many diplomas and short-term courses to become a certified lawyer or legal presider, but I would suggest that you should go for a full-time law degree. You can pursue law from renowned colleges or universities which are regulated by the Bar Council of India (BCI).

So, the degree of Law is divided into six semesters for 3 years which makes it simpler to understand and pursue. Now I understand if you feel you have this question 'When to apply, where to apply, Eligibility Criteria, Syllabus, Exam pattern and which college to choose, well, I had the same questions and so I got your back here. Let me share with you all my research findings for your easy gateway into Law.

Let's start with which exam to apply for. Now to enroll in law schools or colleges you have to give a specific entrance exam. There are 3 different law entrance exams, LSAT, CLAT, and AILET. I found that AILET is the perfect one to get selected in India’s top Law schools and colleges.

AILET or All India Law Entrance Test is a university-level law entrance Exam which is arranged by NLU (National Law University, Delhi). This exam is a door for you to pursue B.A.L.L.B, L.L.M, and Post Graduates Programs through AILET. Before applying for AILET, I checked their eligibility criteria. For B.A L.L.B there is no upper age limit to apply, and the applicant should have completed his/her 10+2 education or equivalent with more than 50% of the percentage. For L.L.M, the applicant should have an L.L.B degree or any bachelor's degree from a recognized university, with more than 55% percentage.

The process to apply for AILET starts with online registration through NLU's official website. After applying online, you have to select the course as this exam is for Undergrads, postgrads, and Ph.D. too. The online registration form will consist of basic details of yourselves like nationality, address, preferred exam center, educational qualifications, religion, and many more minor basic details. After this form filling, you have to do one last thing that uploads a formal picture of yours of approximately 150kbs and then you are led to the payment page, so the fees for General Category is Rs.3050/-, for SC/ST/PWD it is Rs.1050/-, for SC/ST (BPL) it is exempted. After you are done with the online registration, you will get a Personal Id and Password from where you will receive your admit card. For the year 2021, the application form closes on 20th may, 2021 and admit cards would be issued on 5th June 2021.

I have heard this so many times that the entrance exam is taken by thousands of students and the seats are limited. It is true no doubt, yet there are plenty of seats and chances to apply. For B.A L.L.B there are 110+10 seats, 110 seats for AILET Merit, and 10 for foreign national and Kashmir migrants. For L.L.M there are 70+10 seats, 70 seats for AILET Merit, and 10 for foreign national and Kashmir migrants.

AILET is organized offline. The complete test is of 150 questions which are to be solved within the time frame of 90 minutes. I would suggest, as soon as you register yourself for the exam, buckle up yourself and start studying. This test is designed under 5 topics: English (includes comprehension) – This section would be a mixture of grammar and comprehension passages. The comprehension passages will question based on your understanding of the passage. And the grammar will have questions based on filling the blanks, grammatical error correction, vocabulary, and general grammar. After this comes, the mathematics section, questions will be based on your schooling and high-school mathematics. Then there is the General Knowledge section, which also includes questions related to current affairs. You must be prepared with basic GK as well as national and international current affairs. The fourth section is logical reasoning, for this section, it is prominent to be prepared. This section will check your ability to verify patterns, analogies, numerical sequences, alphabetical sequences, and basic logical reasoning. As it is an entrance to the Law degree, obviously there is going to be a legal aptitude section, need not worry, this section will have legal situations are given or propositions which are framed in different ways and you just have to write the answer as to if it is true or not.

You need to remember that this test has negative marking. For each 1 wrong answer, 0.25 negative marks will be deducted because I kind of ignored the negative marking and lost achievable marks. After your exam, the results will be announced in the 3rd week of July 2021 and online in your NLU account. Also, while I was preparing for it, I felt that you need have a closer look on all the 5 subjects of AILET, as all of these subjects are based on really basic concepts, so for better idea, I will mention the subjects and topics for it below:

English – Fill in the blanks, comprehension, synonyms and antonyms, idioms and phrases, jumble words and sentences, vocabulary and correct word selection based on articles, verbs, nouns and prepositions.

Elementary Mathematics – Algebra, Profit and Loss, Time and Work, average speed, distance, diagrams, number system, permutation and combination, mensuration.

Logical reasoning – blood relations, analogies, coding and decoding, syllogism, directions, number series, actions, statements, conclusions, assumptions and rankings.

I appeared for the exam and cleared it. So, I would like to admit to the fact that thorough preparations and constant focus will help you score well. I would also like to suggest that if you are planning to apply; try starting to study months early; solve mock tests and previous year papers to make sure you finish on time and with solving all the questions; keep reading newspapers and once you are done with your syllabus keep revising. I want to wish all the very best to each and everyone for their future.
