EduCrack's Way of Tackling the Different Sections of CMAT

MBA Entrance | CMAT | 15th August 2022

"Strive for progress, not perfection", is the one thing that I have always believed in. Being between average to better, I have always pursued everything of my interest. Unlike the rest of the others, I have always admired the nine-hour work culture. But due to increasing employment problems, I was kind of scared as to if I would get any, and so I knew that I needed something additional other than my degree. I started looking for options. God knows, when did the world grow so much to have so many choices for us! I found some amazing certifications but I wanted more of a post-graduation, so I decided why not do an MBA. Then, I started with my search of colleges, to save your time, here are some MBA colleges that I found for a good fit:

  • Birla Institute of Management Technology, Greater Noida
  • Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai
  • Xavier Business school, Kolkata
  • Christ University Institute of Management, Bengaluru
  • Goa Institute of Management, Goa

I went through their websites and read about their admission process, fees, and entrances. The common thing between all the 5 colleges was the entrance, as all of them accepted CMAT scores. It kind of gave me relief as I don't have to give different exams but just one and it was CMAT. I quickly started my research on CMAT. Trust me, there is a proper process, syllabus, and registration for CMAT.

Now about CMAT, it was not difficult about this exam but everything was shattered, of course, the blessing of the Internet. So, let me club everything for you here. CMAT is a Common Management Admission test conducted by National Test Agency (NTA), which opens doors for you for more than 1500+ MBA colleges with more than 1,00,000+ seats! Other than being a common entrance for the best colleges, the colleges that accept CMAT provide one of the placements and internships, and that is a straight boost on your ladder for a successful and settled career. Now the eligibility criteria for CMAT, there are no specific criteria as such but only that you should have a bachelor's degree from any background or you should be in the final semester while applying.

CMAT is a 3 hours exam that has a total of 100 questions. However, these 100 questions are divided into 4 sections let's see that:

  1. Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation: As far as I have read, this section will have questions on mathematics topics like algebra, trigonometry, linear equations, speed time and distance, ratios and proportions, HCF and LCM, mean median and mode, calendars, and whatever you have learned in your school mathematics. There would be approximately 25 questions in this section.
  2. Logical Reasoning: I am a bit scared for this section, as I think my reasoning ability is not that strong, but as I read the syllabus, it had critical reasoning, visual reasoning, number arrangements, series, direction, cause and effect, blood relations, clocks and calendars, conclusions and all of this felt easier once I started to practice and prepare. There would be 25 questions for this section.
  3. Language Comprehension: As I had done my education through English medium, I found this section quite easier. The questions would be based on basic English grammar like synonyms and antonyms, syllogisms, analogies, Idioms and phrases, verbal reasoning, error identification, sentence correction and there would also be reading comprehension in which a paragraph of about 400-600 words would come and you have answer questions based upon it. Just brush up your basics and you are good to know to answer 25 questions.
  4. General Awareness: This section is all about General knowledge. Static GK based on history, geography, economics, or civics. And questions would also be on current affairs. In total 25 questions would be there for this section. For General knowledge try to read more news, about different cultures, different kinds of world records, famous awards and prizes, finance.

Now you need to remember a few things, for every 1 correct question you would get 4 marks, and for one wrong answer, 1 mark would be deducted so technically the whole paper would be of 400 marks all of the questions would be in objective form. So, after I evaluated the exam I started preparing for the exam. So, while preparing I did face a few difficulties and to overcome them, I made some strategies, so I would like to share them with you all.

I practised a lot of question papers of last year and also sample papers so I concluded that solving 75-90 questions would fetch you good marks.

While studying, there are a lot of different subjects and topics to keep in mind. Personally, I would suggest focusing more on the GK and the Current Affairs section. As the portion is vast and it is difficult to cover, all give me more time for this. Keep reading newspapers and news articles to keep up with the current happenings. I would also suggest to not ignore Geography as an MBA Subject.

Don't answer the questions that you are not sure if the answer would be right or wrong. If you do that, you would risk your score.

Revision is the key, keep revising subjects that you feel need extra attention.

Make sure that while studying, you don't stress yourself too much. And just keep meditating as it has helped me a lot to focus more.

For the year 2021, the exam is expected to be in the last week of March or the first week of April. After my CMAT, I wanted to look for my MBA courses and subjects for the same. Again, I felt that I had too many options so I started to shortlist a few options for me, and according to my likings, I will share them with you:

  1. MBA in Finance
  2. MBA in Human Resource Management
  3. MBA in Marketing
  4. MBA in Health Care Management
  5. MBA in Event Management
  6. MBA in Business Analytics

With so many options, I started to narrow them down by subject and my interest, so all the MBA's have some common subjects like:
