Civil Engineering is the discipline of studying the natural environment and helping to create, design and maintain physical structures following it. This discipline also includes the building and maintenance of structures like canals, dams, bridges, roads, pipelines, etc.

 

It is a discipline that helps to maintain a harmony of both nature and man in a way to maintain a balance between the two. Civil engineering is present throughout several industries like the aerospace industry, hydraulics industry, natural disaster and prevention industry, forensic industry, etc.

 

 

Importance

 

Civil engineering is known to be one of the oldest engineering practices that have been practised over the world. From the making of a simple shelter to making complex infrastructure, civil engineering is present everywhere. Modern society as we know it would not exist without civil engineers. The development of utilities from clean water, drainage systems, power supplies, etc the knowledge and expertise of a civil engineer is required. 

 

About ESE Civil

The Engineering Service Examinations (ESE) is the examinations candidates need to take in order to be recruited for engineering services under the Government of India. This examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The ESE Civil Engineering examinations is a specific examination to help civil engineering candidates get placed. Those who clear the ESE examinations are required to conduct and manage activities in diverse technical fields.

Examination Pattern

ESE civil engineering is a top tanked exam for group A gazetted officers in technical grade. It comprises three parts. Aspirant calls it through different names.

 

Stage 1 or Preliminary Examination

 

 As the name itself denotes, it is the first step. It is like the first stairs towards success. Once you get qualified in this stage, then only you get to appear in stage 2 or mains examination. The Civil engineering ESE exam pattern states that stage 1 is like an elimination round exam. The number obtained in stage 1 does not count in making the merit list.

 

The preliminary stage consists of objective-type questions. All other recruitment bodies like SSC had adopted the online mode of examination for objective type exam, but UPSC still takes it through traditional pen and paper-based.

 

Aspirants get an OMR sheet to fill up in ESE civil engineering exam. The exams happen in two sittings. 

 

The details for the same are as follows:

 

  • First sitting- 200 questions, 200 marks

  • Second sitting- 300 Questions 300 marks

 

An aspirant needs to do their level best in the preliminary exam to qualify. A good score also boosts morale and motivates one to work hard to finally become a class 1 officer in the central government.

 

There is a provision of negative marking. The commission deducts 1/3 marks if you mark a wrong answer in the OMR sheet. This step is taken to discourage blind guess by the aspirants.

 

 

Stage 2 or Mains Exam

 

The real competition starts in this phase. Only serious students who passed stage 1 get the admit card to appear here.

 

Stage 2 Civil engineering ESE exam pattern involves descriptive type questions.

 

An applicant applies for only one discipline out of civil, mechanical, electrical, and electronics & communication. UPSC sets the question paper separately for all the verticals. If you have filled up the form under ESE Civil engineering, you will get a paper based on that.

 

Stage 2 comprised two question papers for 300 marks each to answer.

 

 

Stage 3 or  Interview

 

Stage 2 proves that you have the required knowledge to become an officer in the central government. In stage 3, the interview judges other skills like leadership skills, interpersonal skills, personality, social quality, integrity, and common sense.

Examination Dates

UPSC is a trusted organization and has the faith of millions of students and ordinary citizens. It releases the dates in advance so that aspirants for ESE civil engineering get enough time to prepare themselves. It rarely misses the deadline notified by it.

Preliminary examination date- 18th July 2021

Examination Score

Cut off depends on various reasons. Reservation is one of the vital reasons. Aspirants from SC, ST, OBC, PH require fewer numbers to qualify as compared to the general category candidates. We suggest you look for the last 10 years' cut-off so that you get a fair idea about the performance of other aspirants.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria are similar to other government examinations, except for a few clauses.

 

  • Educational Qualification:- There are four verticals in the examination, and students apply based on their graduation stream. Graduate in engineering from a recognized university is a must.

  • Age- Minimum 21 and maximum 30 (Maximum limit varies for different reserved category aspirants.)

  • Medical /Physical examination- An aspirant should be mentally and physically fit for the posts applied.

Examination Fee

UPSC has set the application fee as Application Fees are RS 200 for every aspirant. Women, SC, ST, and PH candidates get exemption while filing ESE civil engineering forms.

How to Apply

UPSC issues notification for ESE examination. Once the notification is out, an aspirant requires visiting the official website of UPSC. There, aspirants get all the information to apply for the examination.

  • Search the official website of UPSC

  • Look for the apply online section.

  • Click on the online application for the ESE examination.

  • Fill in your personal, educational, and other details in the application forms.

  • Submit the form. 

  • This completes part 1 of the examination.

  • Now, go for the part II application section

  • Upload the documents like signature, photograph, and submit the application fee (If applicable).

  • Preview the form and finally submit it.

  • Download the submitted form. No need to send a physical copy anywhere. Keep it for your future reference.
